Balagam Dental and Medical Clinic Orthodontic & Post-Treatment Care

Post Treatment Instructions

Following proper aftercare is essential to maintain healthy teeth, prevent bacterial buildup, and ensure your treatment works effectively throughout your recovery journey.

General Post-Treatment Care

Initial 24–48 Hours
  • ✓ Allow adequate rest: Avoid strenuous physical exercise, heavy lifting, or vigorous head movements for the first 24 to 48 hours to minimize blood pressure spikes at the treatment site.
  • ✓ Manage surgical gauze pressure: If you underwent an extraction or implant placement, maintain firm, steady pressure on the sterile gauze pad for 45 to 60 minutes. Discard gently and do not chew on the pad.
  • ✓ Cold compress for swelling: Apply an ice pack wrapped in a clean cloth to the cheek area outside the treated site in 15-minute on/off intervals during the first 24 hours to reduce natural swelling.
  • ✓ Follow prescribed medications: Take any prescribed painkillers, anti-inflammatories, or antibiotics exactly on schedule. Do not skip doses or discontinue antibiotics prematurely.

Braces & Clear Aligners (Invisalign)

Orthodontic Journey
  • ✓ After getting your braces fitted, following proper aftercare is essential to maintain healthy teeth and ensure your braces work effectively throughout your orthodontic journey.
  • ✓ After the procedure, gently check your mouth using your tongue and fingers for any wire ends that may cause irritation or discomfort.
  • ✓ Orthodontic wax will be provided to help cover brackets or wires that may rub against the inside of your mouth. Mild soreness in your teeth and mouth is normal for a few days to a week. To ease discomfort, rinse with cold water, use an over-the-counter pain reliever, or apply a numbing gel if needed.
  • ✓ Clear Aligner compliance: Wear your aligners for 20 to 22 hours per day. Only remove them while consuming meals or brushing. Store them strictly in their protective ventilated case when removed.

Oral Hygiene & Cleaning Technique

Daily Protocol
  • ✓ Maintaining good oral hygiene is very important during orthodontic and dental treatment. Brush and floss after every meal, ensuring you clean thoroughly around brackets and wires to remove food particles and prevent plaque buildup or tooth decay.
  • ✓ We will recommend suitable toothbrushes and guide you on special cleaning tools that can help improve your oral care routine at home. If you participate in sports or physical activities, consult us about using a mouth guard to protect your braces and teeth from injury.
  • ✓ Warm saline rinses: Beginning 24 hours after treatment, gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water (1/2 teaspoon table salt in a glass of warm water) 3 to 4 times a day after meals. Do not spit forcefully; allow the solution to spill out into the sink.
  • ✓ Interdental & proxy brushes: Use specialized interproximal brushes to sweep out trapped debris between archwires, brackets, and crown margins without bending appliance wires.

Food & Dietary Guidance

Nutrition & Safety
  • ✓ For the first few days, stick to soft foods while adjusting to your braces or dental restorations (such as yogurts, smoothies, khichdi, mashed potatoes, soups, and eggs).
  • ✓ During the treatment period, avoid hard, sticky, or chewy foods that could loosen or damage brackets or crown margins. Avoid chewing on hard items such as ice, pens, or pencils, as these can harm your appliances.
  • ✓ Temperature precautions: Avoid very hot beverages or steaming foods while local anesthesia is still active, to prevent accidental burns or cheek biting.
  • ✓ No straws for extractions: Avoid drinking through straws or creating suction in your mouth during the first 48 hours to protect the delicate blood clot from dislodging (dry socket prevention).

Avoiding Irritation & Discomfort

Practical Tips
  • ✓ Use medical-grade orthodontic wax: Dry the bracket or poking wire with a tissue and roll a pea-sized ball of relief wax between clean fingers. Press it directly onto the irritating bracket to form a smooth protective shield.
  • ✓ Avoid touching the treated area: Resist touching sutures, extraction sockets, or healing abutments with your fingers or tongue. Touching can introduce bacteria and delay epithelial healing.
  • ✓ Tuck protruding ligature wires: If an archwire tip slightly shifts and catches your inner cheek, use the clean eraser end of a pencil or a cotton bud to gently tuck the wire flat against your tooth until you visit the clinic.
  • ✓ Never smoke or consume tobacco: Nicotine significantly restricts microvascular blood flow, tripling the risk of infection, implant failure, and delayed wound closure.
